Obviously the IDF artillary fire that killed 4 UN “peace keepers” was unintentional. Belmont Club has a fantastic post with extensive press releases from UNIFIL detailing just how close they are to the fighting and how they have been coordinating their humanitarian efforts with the IDF.
Considering the fact that UNIFIL peacekeeping mission was a dead-letter it should naturally be asked why Kofi Annan, as their ultimate commander has seen fit to keep them in a position of danger where their only chance of safety actually depends on accurate targeting by the IDF. Their positions are manifestly so close to the Hezbollah; their convoys so at risk at being confused with mobile Hezbollah forces that only by the grace of God and the accuracy of the IDF have fatalities been avoided until now. They were willing to take the risk. Annan was willing to make the hay. You be the judge of Kofi Annan’s competence both in the care of his men and with respect to the accusation he has made against the IDF.
Before you listen to another word Kofi Anan has to say, please read the whole thing. Kofi Annan was not forced to resign in disgrace years ago is an embarrassment to the entire world.
Others Blogging: Decision08 asks the obvious questions:
WHY on earth would Israel do such a thing? What possible benefit would they gain?
Dr. Sanity has another question and qoutes Shakespeare:
one UN observer injured prior to this most recent bombing was injured by Hezbollah; and that the Israelis evacuated the individual back to Israel for medical treatment (did Kofi praise that action, one wonders?).
Finally, John Podhoretz reminds us of a famous line from Shakespeare when considering the Secretary General: “One may smile, and smile, and still be a villain.”
Consider all this when deciding what really might be going on here.

I see that Belmont updated his dispatch to reflect the newly available information, that the UN had given repeated warnings (via: Reuters & NYT) that Israeli artillery was landing dangerously close. Look, Kofi Annan is a spineless SOB. But Israel’s blatant disregard for the safety of the UN position is to be admonished.
