I have firmly believed since 9/11/2001 that World War 3 is nearly inevitable. The Islamofascists want this war and will do everything they can to force it upon us.
In a post earlier today, Hugh Hewitt quoted from President Lincoln’s second Inaugural address:
“Both parties deprecated war, but one of them would make war rather than let the nation survive, and the other would accept war rather than let it perish. And the war came.”
Just as they did 141 years ago Lincoln’s words cut to the very heart of truth. No matter what we do the Islamofascist’s ultimate goal is war.
Today’s events in Israel bring us to another critical moment in history. Israel responded swiftly, but this is just the beginning.
I called Hugh’s show earlier today after he stated Israel should bomb Damascus (one of Hezbollah’s puppet masters) tonight. My gut agrees but the question is and the one I asked Hugh is what then?
Will an air raid on Damascus be the preface for a larger war in the middle east?
How would Syria respond, or their allies and Hezbollah’s patriarch Iran?
Hugh answered they would do nothing. That the Syrians know they would loose a war with Israel. That sounds far too simple to me.
We are continuously told that our hands are tied with Iran and their nuclear ambitions because we are already occupied with Iraq, and Afghanistan and that the Iranian army would be a much tougher fight than Saddam’s Baathists. These concerns come from not only from the usual doves but some active duty and retired generals as well.
If Iran chooes to enter this war, and their president has been nothing but bellicose since his pseudo election, the US will certainly be drawn into it as well. An Israeli attack on Damascus would be seen by Achmadinawhackjob as a perfect moment to walk the walk.
As with all power mad, and delusional tyrants he has far more bravado than brains. Carelessly starting a world war is exactly what his kind are prone to. He would view the death of millions of Iranians as a glorious and noble moment in history, not the horrific and needless waste of life that it will be.
I am not arguing against US involvement. We must certainly support our ally Israel when and if they call for help. My only question is the timing. Do we want this war now?
Are we ready for this war now?
I fear too many Americans are not. A greater war in the middle east would undoubtedly be blamed on George Bush by the world and by many on the left here at home. The naked provocations of Hamas and Hezbollah, and the Iranian theocracy all but forgotten.
There is little doubt the islamofascists will continue to provoke both the United States and Israel until they eventually get the war they are seeking. Regardless we may have to wait for another 9/11 before Americans are united in their resolve to face the threat of islamofascism and crush it once and for all.
War may come tonight or it may be delayed for several months or even years but sooner or later War Will Come.
I hope and pray I am wrong.
***Update***
Rick Moran sees war coming as well:
Linking PostsThe news out of the Middle East today is grim and getting more grim by the hour. Israel, Lebanon, Syria, and Iran are nerving themselves for a confrontation that could turn into a general war if things were to get out of control.
And these events seem to this observer to be slowly spiraling out of control. This is not the sudden spasm of war as we experienced in 1967 and 1973. This is like a slow motion explosion, almost a steady, determined march toward the battlements by Israel and its enemies as the IDF put more and more pressure on Hamas and the Palestinians to relent and release their captured soldier.

Tua,
Norman Podhortez wrote an article for Commentary a few years back about WWIV which is the war against terrorism (the Cold War being WWIII). I believe the impending war you talk about will be just another battle in WWIV and I do believe it is inevitable. The problem with the extremists that we face today is that there is no talking them out of what they want to do. Look at the offer by Israel that Yasser Arafat turned down under Clinton. Arabs do not want peace with Israel. They do not want their land back. What Palestinians and other Arabs want is the destruction of Israel and all the Jews. They will not stop at less until they get what they want. Appeasing them might sound like the most humane thing to do but it only prolongs the eventual battle. If you don’t believe me go read Hamas’ Covenant you will see that in the prologue it states that “Israel will exist and will continue to exist until Islam will obliterate it, just as it obliterated others before it.”
In Section 13 of the Covenant it states that “There is no solution for the Palestinian question except through Jihad. Initiatives, proposals and international conferences area all a waste of time.”
As far as how long it will take for us to get involved I have no idea. I doubt Bush will jump into another front because like you said we prolly don’t have the resources needed to properly help them. Israel, however, is no slouch when it comes to defending itself so I doubt we really need to worry too much right now.
War is going to happen, the question is when.

I believe it’s high time we stopped admonishing Israel and let them do as them see fit. I’d like to think that if I was kidnapped by Syrian terrorists that my government would send in my brothers-in-arms to try and retrieve me, and damn the consequences.
I still think one of the top five most humiliating moments in U.S. history is Jimmy Carter not doing a damn thing to rescue American hostages for nearly a full year.
Why not just have Israel try the “regime change on the cheap” method that American liberals think we should have done in Iraq. (Removed Saddam, and then left immediately). Wipe out Syria’s thugocracy and wait and see what replaces it. If it turns out to be worse, then simply wipe them out too, rinse, repeat.
I have no faith that this would ultimately work out positively for anyone involved, but at least it would discredit that line of thinking once and for all.

[…] My friend Rick at The Real Ugly American has a thoughtful post up that raises troubling questions. Is World War Three coming? Is it coming no matter what we do because others, not fully sane, will force it on us? Lord knows I have a much higher personal stake in what is going on in the Middle East than most pundits commenting these days (a point Rick made when he emailed me the link to this post of his). If Iran chooses to enter this war, and their president has been nothing but bellicose since his pseudo election, the US will certainly be drawn into it as well. I have a somewhat different take:
Iran has a history of fighting wars through subsidiaries, (guess who funds 80% of Hizbollah and a multi-million dollar chunk of Hamas) and the current difficulties should be seen in that light.
It looks like Iran is looking for last minute leverage in the negotiations over nuclear rights and the final status of Iraq. Iran murdered hundreds in the 80s because of American support to Iraq in that war. Most of those deaths occurred in Europe.
So, regardless of the Isreali need to strike back, this is a minor squabble that the media is trying to make into something big. Give it a week and see what happens. Of course I will limit that with the possibility, though remote, that something new will happen, actually causing war.
But Isreal is too smart to go to war over a couple of soldiers. They just have to make the Islamists suffer enough that kidnappings do not become common practice. The Islamists understand that, but want to see how far they can push it. But they do not want war (not that they care about civilians) because that would give Isreal an excuse to go in and destroy training camps. So Isreal will shut down the airport, kill several of our enemies, fire off a bunch of artillery. But it will calm down.
Yes, war will come. But not today. Be thankful, I am. I am also thankful our negotiators are pushing the Iranians hard enough that they are squealing. I think this means we are close to a deal that will cut the insurgents off from support in Iran, which will save soldiers.

TRUA… this is a significant post. The reality is that Israel has only two choices, don’t respond and encourage further incursions (Those that do not understand reinforcing behavior opt for having Israel “Show Restraint.” The second choice is to respond each and every time the islamofascists raise their ugly head. Those that do not understand this are much more likely to get innocent people killed.
Again, great post and I’m glad you are on it.
