Of course thats not what the headline reads in The Hill. Instead the piece is titled GOP Bill Targets NY Times. Which is the new meme of the MSM. The Republicans are picking on the poor New York and LA Times which were just doing their patriotic duty….. please.
Here is the meat of the story:
House Republican leaders are expected to introduce a resolution today condemning The New York Times for publishing a story last week that exposed government monitoring of banking records.
The resolution is expected to condemn the leak and publication of classified documents, said one Republican aide with knowledge of the impending legislation.
Rep. J.D. Hayworth (R-Ariz.), working independently from his leadership, began circulating a letter to House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) during a late series of votes yesterday asking his leaders to revoke the Times’s congressional press credentials.
Kudos to Congressman Hayworth.
***Update***
Patterico notices Doyle McManus is changing his story.
I have every confidence that if a politician backpedaled this obviously, Doyle McManus the veteran Washington journalist would not let it go without mention.
**Update**
The House has drafted a Resolution and Hugh Hewitt Hates it!

How come this took so long to materialize? The “times” is a disgrace to the profession and a blight on the great history of the press in this country.

What do you want to bet that the authors have a lucrative book deal in 6-9 months? NYT is a disgrace and it is too bad that this will become politicized while national security is at stake.

It’s about the LEAKERS, people.
the way to avoid the inevitable victimization of the NYT/LAT axis against the evil Bush regime is to go after the people who leaked the info, hammer and tong.
Right now this minute, Congress should convene hearings and depose under oath every person who is remotely connected to this operation. If they need to do this in closed session so be it.
Then no one should rest for one minute until they/we have identified and prosecuted the LEAKERS of the information, for it is THEY who have really broken the law and betrayed their public trust. the involved newspapers have also broken their public trust but thats what they do these days and its a fact of life.
During the course of that investigation, every reporter and editor involved in the story should be deposed under oath to find out who thbey talked to. If these reporters and editors cant find it in their hearst to cooperate to help root out terrorist enablers in our intel community, THEN they should be chucked in the pokey for as long as it takes for them to recognize the plain fact that freedom of the press brings responsibility.
If, as i suspect, it takes 20 years for that to sink into bill keller’s head, or lichtblau or mcmanus or whoever, then so be it. enjoy the orange jumpsuits and prison food.
HOWEVER, if the focus is on charging the papers with treason and “hey lets take away their credential” that effort will end in a PR disaster. For good reason: it gives the press every weapon they need to make the “Bush trying to destroy the free press” meme that so many are already trying to fashion out of this story.
The rest of the MSM are hoping and praying that’s how this story spools out.
Keep eye on ball, Daniel-san: Get the LEAKERS!! If we do THAT, then the reporters and editors will be shamed and disgraced in the way they deserve. If the focus remains on tearing after the Times then the whole thing will crash and burn.

I agree completely Mike D. With one addition. I see nothing wrong with both the house and Senate passing non binding resolutions condemning the LA Times New York Times and Wall Street Journal for publishing this classified information.
