Reuters, Fox, and The Associated Press are reporting people have heard shots have been fired in the Rayburn (sp) office building.
Major Garret of Fox is in the building cafeteria and is reporting that part of the building has been locked down. He has been ordered by Capitol police to stay where he is and is not allowed to leave the cafeteria.
The shots were reportedly fired in the parking garage. Capitol police are investigating now. I will update as I hear more.
I will continue live blogging with updates as long as possible.
***Updates***
Garret is reporting now an email from the Capitol police advising all personell staff and members of congress to seek shelter, stay away from windows, and close doors behind them but do not lock doors.
***Update*****
Garret is now reporting he has been told there is a captiol police firing range in the building. He is also reporting that capitol police are now going room to room searching the building.
***update***
Garret is now reporting that he and everyone else in the cafeteria have been locked in by the capitol police. The parking garages at the office building are underground. He can still observe capitol police quickly patroling the halls going office to office.
****Update****
Associated Press is now reporting 4 ambulances are arriving at the Rayburn office building. It could be just a precaution. Still no reports of any injuries.
**Update***
Chris Wallace at fox is now reporting that Capitol Police have dispatched special ops personell and the FBI has sent an anti terroristunit to the scene. Again this sounds like precautionary measures.
***Update***
Fox is reporting police have now expanded the sealed off area. A congressman has just confirmed on fox that there is indeed a firing range in the building.
***Update**
Fox is now reporting a capitol police officer and a congressional staffer told reported hearing shots fired in the parking garage. As capitol police investigated they smelled gunpowder. They are searching for a gunman or anyone possibly injured. They do beleive a shot or shots have been fired.
***Update***
“shots” were initially reported about 60 minutes ago as of now there have still been no injuries reported. This appears to be at most an Isolated event for now.
***Update***
Fox is airing video tape of a few reporters in the parking garage asking a capitol police officer if they are safe to move. The reports are of course hounding every capitol police officer they see. It appears police are escorting them out of the building or at least to a different location.
***Update****
Fox is still airing video of several reporters trying to get information from the police. There seems to be lots of confusion but no urgency like you would see if anyone had been injured.
An investigator with the capitol police is now asking the reporters if they were in the general area and if they have any information for him. He tells them this is not a press conference. One reporter tells him hes a reporter and he has to do his job. The investigator says he is unaware of any injuries.
Someone from the capitol police is now ordering all of the press to move across the street.
**update**
Ok this is as sketchy as it gets. Fox says they heard an ambulance had backed up to the building and was seen wheeling a gurney into the building. They follow up saying they still have not heard of any injuries.
***Update***
Here is the CNN report.
WASHINGTON (CNN) — Capitol Police said Friday they were investigating reports of sounds of gunfire in the garage of the Rayburn Office Building, where members of the House have their offices.
Law enforcement expert Mike Brooks said he had not heard any reports of victims or physical evidence of gunfire.
He noted that Capitol Police have a firing range in the basement, but a congressional source said the shots were not heard from that level.
The alert came moments after a press conference held by Rep. John Sensenbrenner on immigration reform, CNN producer Deidre Walsh said.“We saw several Capitol Hill police officers running quickly down the hallway,” she said. Soon after that an announcement was made throughout the building.
Rep. Peter Hoekstra, R-Michigan, was conducting a House Intelligence Committee hearing at the time.
Hoekstra interrupted a witness to tell those at the hearing to remain in the room and said doors must be closed.
“It’s a little unsettling to get a Blackberry message put in front of you that says there’s gunfire in the building,” he said.
Still nothing new.
***Update***
Major Garret is reporting from the cafeteria that a PA announcement was made 4 mins ago 3 times repeating that capitol police are still investigating and that everyone should remain where they are.
A press conference is scheduled for noon eastern time.
****Update***

They have no reports of anyone being captured, anyone arrested, no reports of anyone having a gun on them and no reports of any injuries at this time.
She confirms there is a firing range and they are looking into the possibility of the shots being fired there and someone hearing it.
***editors note*** Reporters ask the dumbest questions. Some guy just asked “is there any possibility this is not a serious incident?”
Gee ya think? There are two possibilities bub, either it is or it isn’t. *****
A reporter asks about a rumor that someone was seen being wheeled out on a gurney. The officer answers she has no knowledge of that.
briefing over. There is another briefing scheduled one hour from now.
***Update***

Fox now airing video of a black woman being loaded into an ambulance. She dies not appear to have any serious injuries.
***Udpate***
Jim Angle at Fox is now reporting the man with the gun may have been a policeman and the report may be completely bogus. He says capitol police are now advising people in the building to lock their doors and not to open them until police knock on the door and give them a codeword notifying them it is ok to exit.

This from congressman Jack Kingston’s office:***
“This morning, a member of Congressman Kingston’s staff was in the House Staff Gym when the Rayburn House Office Building was put under lockdown due to alleged gun shots. Under guidance of law enforcement officials, the staffer was taken via ambulance to the hospital. She was not injured or shot, just a little shaken up under the circumstances.“We have been in contact with our colleague and she is doing well.
UPDATE (1:39 PM): The Capitol Police just checked out our office. The officers were very courteous and respectful. We’re glad they’re doing such a thorough job. All is quiet.
UPDATE (1:46 PM): Our colleague has been released from the hospital and is heading home. Thanks to everyone for the calls.
***
**Update**
All clear given at the Rayburn building. Major Garret has been let out of the cafeteria so was it a hoax? were there really any shots fired? You definitely can not blame the police for being cautious.
***Update***
Fox’s Niel Cavuto is interviing New Jersey Congressman Jim Saxson who says he was exiting an elevator in the Rayburn building when he heard what he thought were between 6 and 10 shots. He says the capitol police should have further details later today on what exactly the congressman and other witnesses heard.
