I don’t want to talk about the actual comments at the funeral. Some people criticized many of the comments made at Mrs. King’s funeral Including Kate O’Beirne on Hardball last night. King Moonbat Digby of Hullabaloo took issue with her comments and led the charge with this salvo:

If you haven’t read about it elsewhere, President Bush apparently looked a bit sheepish at Coretta Scott King’s funeral service today. Why? Because two speakers had the gall to talk about the values the Kings stood for: fighting poverty, fighting racial division, standing up for working Americans.

Yes, it had to be unpleasant for poor little President Bubble Boy having to deal with something other than his hand-picked sycophants. He’s probably never even

Typically, his supporters’ knee jerk response is to rhetorically lynch African Americans.

He is obviously all broken up over Mrs. Kings death.

This was the cue for his commentors to cut loose:

I thought that the Anti-war sentiments were very appropriate for the funeral of a civil-rights leader. Fuck anyone who feels the need to tell someone how to grieve! I thought that it was a great occasion (especially in front of Bush) to show disapproval of the bullshit that’s going on. No doubt the Kings are spinning in the grave.

The GOP: not satisfied in just controlling our lives–now controlling our funerals.

Kate and those like her took the fun out of erals a long time ago.

Some Freeper (white, no doubt) talked about how it ‘demeaned the teachings of MLK’.

Such as, y’know, ‘know your place, boy’.

Kate the Hate is just reading the script.

Was I the only one hoping Bruce Campbell would summersault onto the set with a 12-gauge double-barreled Remington and say: “Shop Smart. Shop S-Mart!”?

Any red blooded aryan employee of the Rethuglcan screech machine knows that you never ever pass up an opportunity to insult a Democrat. Social Darwinists attack non-stop. They are lizard brains. That’s what they do They don’t hold discussions with the proles, after all. They aim to take us out.

And they did score big with the Wellstone service, didn’t they?

It is time to ignore them and the propaganda ministry that puts them on the air. The system is rigged.

Mad King George III is back, just like in 1776. Somebody is trying to tell us something. It is time for revolution. It’s the American way.

Oh boy, it sure is get the niggers day here in good ‘ol Naziland USA. First McCain on Obama, and now this nonsense. Talk about solidifying the base. I’m surprised the two Bush zombies didn’t come out wearing white sheets.

UA Yes he really said that

Dem’ Bushies, dey’ sure do love dem’ some dead black civil rights leaders, don’t dey’? Pity dey’ don’t give a !@#$ ’bout dem’ while dey’s alive, eh?

Actually I’d just bring a full bladder to Katie’s funeral. Just

I’d like to be there to piss on the grave.

Given that this is the man who used the Willie Horton ads in 1988 and who used the most sordid forms of racial politics in his runs for the Senate and congress, who was Ronald Reagan’s VP and who elevated that most prominent hater of black people - Clarence Thomas- to the Supreme Court, the sentence is too generous.

George H. W. Bush might not be a racist himself, though I believe he probably is, but he’s sure willing to make common cause with them if he thinks it will get him what he wants.
EPT

Why can’t they have good Negroes there? JC Watts jr., Condoleeza, Lynn Swan, or Colin Powell. There not like those other uppity coloreds. They show the dignity and respect that George Bush and HW Bush have for the plight of Negroes today.
Kate Walsh

Hey *Kahn*, or maybe I should say “Kahane”, you are in no fucking position, eh Shylock? The grand Skull and Bones white boys of the RNC are never gonna give YOUR KIND any real power, except maybe to do a “Roy Cohn” for them. So shut the fuck up.

So was our President ambushed or bushwacked? What an amazing episode for the entire country: someone with the moral authority and brass to take President Spoiled Brat out behind the woodshed. Maybe it will be remembered as the turning point in the second American revolution. Let’s hope the GOP Brownshirts make a big issue out of this, as big as Dean’s scream, then everyone who missed it, will see.
Brian Jackson

Yes Brian we shall see. Every time I think the Democratic Party has hit bottom, it finds a new low.

Bloggers on both sides are talking about the funeral, and the reaction to the funeral and the reaction to the reaction. Here are a few of them:

Decision08 recognizes the new President of the NAACP for his comments.

As we’ve been discussing in other threads, there is some disagreement over whether the activities at King’s funeral yesterday were disrespectful, inappropriate, meanspirited, or any and all of the above. For the record, at least one prominent black leader praised Bush for attending:

“President Bush was where he should have been,” said Bruce S. Gordon, the new president of the NAACP. “Coretta Scott King is a very important figure in black American history and American history. I thought it was appropriate for the president to be there to honor her.”

Expose the Left calls the service Wellstone II.

Outside the Beltway thought President Bush gave an elequent tribute.

The Political Pit Bull asks to imagine the reaction if President Bush had made a political statement in his remarks at King’s funeral today.

Stop the ACLU takes particular issue with Jimmy Carter’s comments.

  3. You once talked about what people would say on the internet and not in person. This is a perfect example. Would these people being critical of the funeral go to black colleagues anywhere and say it to their face? As far as what was said in celebration of Mrs. King, what does the right expect to be said. As an icon of the civil rights movement I cant’ see the comments being directed to how this administration is defiling a lot of what the King’s faught for. Did the right expect a tribute to Bush?

  4. I don’t understand how Mrs. King’s funeral has anything to do with GWB.

To answer your question I can only speak for myself and No I would not have any problem telling my black co-workers that Jimmy Carter was a race baiter or politicizing this woman’s funeral was in poor taste.

Why would they be offended at at that?

I don’t believe all black people think the same way do you?

Btw I have no idea what she had in her will. I suppose it is possible she wanted this spectacle?

  5. The outrage here is awesome, did you give two s***s about Mrs. King when she was alive. Or do you get up in arms when americans speak their minds in front of the president. (maybe this is what he gets for being so sheltered the last 5 years, just a thought)
Oh and is it any of your business to criticize someone else’s funeral? just asking

    Comment by matt February 8, 2006 @ 2:48 pm

  6. The Kings gave their lives (literally in one case) to fight oppression and injustice in this world.

Need I remind you about Bush and Florida 2000 when thousands of minorities were (illegally) cast from the voting rolls, which led to GWB becoming President?

Need I remind you of GWB’s boy Rove and his use of race to beat McCain in the primaries?
And don’t give me that crap about “it wasn’t George”.
George cut his vacation short to push himself into the Schaivo case that had NOTHING to do with him.
    Leaders lead. GWB doesn’t.

The day your boy disavows the racist actions of Rove and his posse is the day he’ll have a moral leg to stand on.
In the meantime, we’ll let the world know what he’s really like WHEREVER we have to.

  7. The fact that you don’t realize and have a right to be offended by that is why you truly are “The Real Ugly American!” One more point many funerals are quote “politicized” and if it were a righty you guys would be talking about the justification of it too. Pleading ignorance on this one will only justify are criticisms of your party.

  8. The fact that you don’t realize and have a right to be offended by that is why you truly are “The Real Ugly American!”

    who said anything about rights?

Pleading ignorance on this one will only justify are criticisms of your party.

again not my party but you already knew that.

    and Matt:

Oh and is it any of your business to criticize someone else’s funeral? just asking

I didn’t criticize anyone’s funeral. Reading comprehension is your friend.

  9. You didn’t acknowledge the statement that you would defend any political statement made at a righty funeral. Check the soundbytes going around regarding Tom Delay’s statements at Reagan’s funeral. The point being is that at a activists or a politicians funeral statements are going to be made about the cause they faught for. If you expect anything less your more naive then I already believe you to be.

  10. I as a Black woman was ashamed and angry that our people are so stupid and spineless,to allow old race baiting retreads like Lowery to speak. How in the hell can these frauds talk about peace and accuse anybody else of peacebreaking when our communities now are the modern day”Killing Fields”?damn hypocrites!still stuck in the past and still haven’t gotten that right!

  11. Thank you for your comments Lisa. I wonder how MA feels about you not being offended.

Again I did not comment on the funeral but the free for all that took place after some right wing talking heads criticized some of the comments made at the funeral.

As to the question would I ever criticize some comment made at some funeral some where by partisans on either side…

If I didn’t say it already no I don’t think comments made in an attempt to make partisan political points at a funeral is appropriate.
