Well I just received this email from Oprah’s book club:

apparently Oprah is continuing to help this fraud sell his book. I hope Oprah condemns this man tomorrow but I seriously doubt she will. I will Tivo the program and watch it tomorrow night.

I have been meaning to write about this ever since Oprah called in to Larry King’s program to defend this scumbag.

Phoning in near the end of the show, on which Frey gave his first interview since the controversy broke earlier this week, she dismissed the affair :

as “much ado about nothing” and urged readers inspired by the book to “keep holding on.”From the time he was 10-years-old, drinking and tormenting himself and his parents, and he stepped out of that history to be the man that he is today,

Wrong Oprah, before The Smoking Gun exposed this fraud for the lying scumbab that he is you could have pled ignorance and blamed your producers for being incompetent and not checking the facts of his story. Not anymore.

It did not take much effort and The Smoking Gun has admittedly only scratched the surface of his lies. Any objective person can make reasonable conclusions based on what we know already. I for one am certain he had no junkie hooker girlfriend in rehab and this fictional character never killed herself in a fleabag motel.

For Oprah to continue to defend him is unconscionable. I am not an “Oprah hater”. I do not begrudge her success, or take serious issue with the usually bland, and unimportant content of her program. She has done a lot of very nice things for a lot of people. But this has got to stop. Oprah needs to publicly condemn this man for the fraud he is and apologized to the millions of people she either knowingly or unwittingly helped to defraud. Frey is responsible for his fraud but Oprah is responsible for foisting his fraud on the vast majority of people who paid for his book and believed his lies. She gave him credibility and notoriety he otherwise would never have seen.

If she fails to come forward she is just as guilty as Frey in my book.

Writers of all stripes, even novelists, have a contract with the reader. That unspoken agreement is about truth, that the events that happen in the book have a certain truth to them, that the author is true to his characters. Writing is ultimately the exploration of truth, even when the entire story is made up. It’s a truth about the human condition. But it is still about truth. Novelists have to be true to character, story and setting, otherwise it reads false. Journalists need to be true to the facts (although that seems to be less of a trend lately). Essayists need to be true to what they believe, otherwise their writing rings hollow. We expect memoirists to be true to the events and their views or feelings towards them, especially those who trumpet so loud about what is real and what isn’t. Without truth, it doesn’t matter what you write because you are cheating the reader and, eventually, yourself.

It seems this blogger grew up near Frey.

I discovered that this self-appointed healer of the drug-induced and doer of all things evil actually went to school one town over from where I grew up, played soccer against me and drank at the same parties each weekend. A quick check of those I knew from St. Joe confirmed that Frey was actually one of the rich kids/popular clique in high school (as one friend put it, “I didn’t get to know him well because I wasn’t one of the cool kids.”) … Now, I’m interested.

Culture of Life Health News isn’t too fond of Frey or his lies having been personally affected by a similar fraud perpetrated by her own sister!

I would really like to hear more of her story. Even if Dan Rather wasn’t interested.
